Skincare Before Makeup: The Right Order to Apply Products

Makeup sits better when your skin is properly prepared. The right skincare order helps each product absorb, supports a smoother finish, and prevents heavy layers from pilling under foundation.

1. Cleanser

Start with a gentle cleanser to remove overnight oil, sweat, and leftover product. In the morning, avoid anything that leaves your skin tight or squeaky. Clean, comfortable skin is the best canvas for makeup.

2. Toner or essence, if you use one

A hydrating toner or essence can add a light layer of moisture. Press it into the skin with your hands and allow it to settle. This step is optional, so skip it if your routine is already working well without it.

3. Treatment serum

Apply your thinnest targeted product next. Hydrating serums usually work well before richer creams. If you use an active ingredient, follow its directions and introduce it gradually rather than layering several strong treatments before makeup.

4. Eye product, if needed

Use a small amount of eye cream or gel around the orbital bone. Avoid applying too much directly beneath the lashes, where excess product can cause concealer to slide.

5. Moisturizer

Choose a texture that suits your skin. A lightweight lotion can be comfortable for oily or combination skin, while a richer cream may help dry skin look smoother. Give moisturizer a few minutes to absorb before starting your base.

6. Sunscreen

In the daytime, sunscreen is the final skincare step. Apply enough to cover the face, ears, and neck, then let it set. If your sunscreen pills, try using thinner layers underneath or reduce the number of products before it.

How long should you wait?

You do not need a long pause between every step. Give each layer enough time to feel settled rather than wet or slippery. If makeup rolls up, use less product, press instead of rub, and wait a little longer after moisturizer or sunscreen.

The goal is not the longest routine. It is a balanced routine that leaves your skin hydrated, protected, and ready for makeup.
